What the sample cannot tell you
Everything that decides whether a flexible stone installation lasts sits behind the face: the backing, the adhesive, the substrate and the detailing. A hand sample shows none of it.
So the sample and the paperwork are one submission, not two. A sample that arrives without the data sheet has not been submitted — it has been shown to you.

Judge the face properly
- At real size. At least one full sheet module and a joint. Sheet formats vary, so ask what the module is.
- At real distance. Almost always further than people hold a sample.
- In real light. Outdoors for external use, on the intended orientation, at more than one time of day.
- Wet as well as dry. Many stones darken substantially when wet, and some do not fully return. This is the check most often skipped and most often regretted.
- Against the adjacent materials, not against a white desk.
Physical checks worth running
These are informal — they are not standardised tests and they do not replace published data. They are useful because they reveal failure modes that a photograph and a specification sheet do not.
Flex it to your radius. If the project has a curve, bend the sample to that radius and inspect the face under raking light for hairline cracking or crazing. Check both convex and concave — a product rated for one is not automatically rated for the other.
Try to separate the layers. At a cut edge, attempt to peel the stone from the backing. You are looking at how tenacious that bond is, since it is a bond the installation depends on permanently.
Wet and dry it. Soak the sample, then let it dry fully. Look for staining, tone change, delamination at edges, or the backing showing through.
Scratch and knock it. In a corner. A thin facing does not resist impact like a slab, and knowing how it marks tells you whether it belongs at ground level.
Look at a cut edge. Edges are where thin products reveal themselves and where water gets in. If the design exposes any edge, the detailing has to address it.
Approve a range, not a piece
The face is natural stone, so it varies within a source and between batches. A single approved sample is not a usable standard, because the delivered material will not match it exactly and there is then no agreed basis for accepting or rejecting.

Where a mockup earns its cost
On a large area, a tight radius, an exterior elevation, or wherever the substrate is unusual. A built mockup tests the bond, the joint pattern, the tolerance and the workmanship together, and it becomes the standard later work is judged against — which is not something a sample can do.
