Texture is a lighting decision

This is the part that gets decided last and should be decided first. A textured surface is read through the shadows its relief casts. Remove the shadows and the texture disappears.

  • Grazing light — a source close to the wall, aimed along it — maximises shadow and makes relief legible.
  • Flat frontal light erases it. A downlight two metres out from the wall does almost nothing for texture.
  • Daylight from a side window produces the effect for part of the day and loses it for the rest.

If the lighting cannot be arranged to graze the surface, spend the budget on something else. A textured finish under flat light is an expensive flat colour.

The most common mistake is specifying a finish approved from a sample held at 30 cm for a wall that will only ever be seen from four metres.

The families

Wet-applied seamless — microcement, polished plaster, tadelakt, textured render. No joints, so no joint pattern to design. Demands a flat, stable, correctly prepared substrate, and cracks wherever that substrate moves. Needs sealing, and the sealer is a consumable.

Applied relief panels — timber slat, fluted MDF, moulded mineral or composite panels. Fast, dry installation and predictable relief. Introduces a joint and module pattern, which is a design decision whether or not you make it deliberately.

Unit-based — split-face stone, brick slip, textured tile. Follows curves and irregularities more easily than sheets, at the cost of substantially more joint length to maintain.

Coatings — textured and sand-loaded paints, limewash. Cheapest, lowest relief, easiest to change. Reads at close range only.

What the substrate decides

Most textured finish failures are substrate failures:

  • Panels telegraph an uneven wall — flatness tolerance matters more than for flat finishes because raking light exposes every deviation.
  • Wet-applied finishes crack over anything that moves, and studwork moves.
  • Heavy unit finishes need fixings reaching structure.

Where texture is the wrong choice

  • High-touch surfaces. Deep relief in a corridor collects hands and marks, and cannot be wiped.
  • Rooms that need cleaning. Texture holds dust. In kitchens it holds grease.
  • Wet areas, without a properly specified system behind it. The waterproofing does the work; the finish does not.
  • Rooms that already have a dominant surface. Texture competing with strong flooring or joinery reads as clutter.

  1. Confirm the lighting can graze the surface. If not, stop here.

Why does my textured wall look flat?

Almost always lighting. Texture is read through the shadows it casts, so a light source directly facing the wall erases it. Move the light close to the wall and aim it along the surface rather than at it.

Is microcement suitable for a bathroom?

It can be, but the waterproofing layer behind it does the work, not the finish itself. Microcement over a failed membrane still results in a wet wall. Specify the tanking system first and the finish second.

How much texture is too much?

When it competes. A textured wall in a room that already has strong flooring, joinery and lighting reads as noise. One dominant surface per room is a reliable rule.

Does texture help acoustics?

Barely, unless the material is actually absorptive. Surface relief scatters sound but removes very little energy. Acoustic improvement requires porous or resonant construction, not a textured coating.
