Durability is a conditional property
“This material lasts 50 years” is not a claim that can be evaluated, because durability is always relative to an exposure. The same product may perform for decades on a sheltered interior wall and degrade in a few years on an exposed coastal elevation.
A usable durability statement has three parts:
- The property — resistance to what: UV, moisture cycling, freeze-thaw, impact, abrasion, chemicals, salt.
- The condition — the exposure it was tested or assessed under.
- The standard — the test method, named.
If any of the three is missing, treat the figure as marketing rather than data.
Four questions that separate candidates
How long before it needs attention? Not before it fails — before it needs work. Coated materials need recoating long before the substrate is at risk.
What does that attention involve? Cleaning is cheap. Recoating means surface preparation, weather windows and access. Replacement means removing and refitting.
